Valley View’s English Language Learner (ELL) program is for students who have a language other than English spoken in their home and have not yet acquired the English language needed for academic success. When parents register their child for school, they are required to fill out a home language survey. If this survey indicates a language other than English is spoken in the home, the district’s English Learning Teacher will coordinate a screening to determine their English language proficiency level. If the level is less than proficient, the student will be offered ESL services. It is the parent’s right to accept or deny ESL services.
Tutors provide instruction with preloading students with academic and social vocabulary. Teachers also work to enrich the proficiency skills of students with English language needs.
Students in the ESL program are eligible for Pass/Fail and/or modified grades based on their English language proficiency levels. Parents will be notified of the types of modifications being used in the regular classroom.
